Description: Train to be an English teacher in the culturally rich and historically fascinating city of Istanbul. We provide internationally recognised teaching qualifications as well as assistance finding teaching positions after the course. Istanbul is a thriving city and the gateway to the East. If you are adventurous and looking to the future there is no better place to start.

Information about the course
Candidates should note that the course entails not only input sessions, teaching practice, lesson planning, written work, and external observations, but also a considerable amount of administration and paper work: candidates will be expected to keep their own up-to-date portfolio during the course.

Language Analysis: This is designed to raise awareness of the structure, meaning, and use of English. You will be expected to research the relevant area, referring to grammar books and possibly completing a work sheet before the sessions.

Methodology: These sessions aim to introduce you to a variety of different techniques used in the classroom and to consider the rationale behind them. Again you will be expected to consult reading relevant to the topic of the session. As far as possible, the tutors will use those methods they wish the trainees to use in their teaching. Thus, pair and group work, self-assessment activities, and tasks of a practical nature will take precedence over lectures. Participation is very important and will be taken into account when the final results are being considered.

Teaching Practice: Teaching Practice (TP) will begin on day 1 (full-time course) and day 3 (part-time course). For this we arrange classes of volunteer students. There will be two levels and participants will have the opportunity to teach both, changing levels half way through the course. Trainees will work in groups for T.P. (max. 6). You begin teaching lessons of 20 minutes and build up to 40 minutes with a final 60 minute lesson. It is important to remember that although you teach only part of the lesson, you will be involved in the planning of the day's class, in order to assure a coherent lesson for the learners.

Planning time will be built into the timetable, initially with guidance from your T.P. tutor, so that you can plan together. You cannot expect to finish planning in this time and will have to be available out of course hours in order to complete this. However, time within course hours is a valuable opportunity to liase with the group and to look at materials. The amount of supervision and help is considerable at the beginning but is gradually decreased over the course, trainees being expected to show more independence and initiative in lesson preparation. It is essential that the T.P. group be as supportive and co-operative as possible. When teaching, the other members of your group will be doing observation tasks and the tutor will be observing the lesson. Most people are apprehensive about this, so it is important to plan together and have a shared responsibility towards the lesson. You will all be asked to evaluate the lessons in terms of how the learners benefited as opposed to 'teacher performance'.

Pre and post lesson evaluation sheets will be given and are a required part of the course. Feedback on the lesson is generally delayed until the next course day so that you have the chance to reflect on your lesson before starting the discussion. You are expected to assess your own and others' lessons in an open, constructive and mature way. If you are unable to discuss weaknesses as well as strengths, this course is not suitable for you. A written observation report will be provided by the tutor at the end of feedback.

Observations: One of the requirements of the course is to observe 6 hours of lessons taught by experienced teachers. They are to be done out of course hours. Please remember that it is 6 full hours (360 minutes), not 6 lessons. You will be required to complete observation tasks during the lesson, which are then handed in.

Written Work: Along with lesson evaluation tasks, observation tasks and, at times pre-session tasks, CELTA requires that you produce 4 pieces of written work connected with ELT. Strict deadlines are imposed. Candidates who fail more than one written assignment are not eligible for a pass. We expect all written work handed in to your tutor to be proof read to ensure there are no spelling or grammatical mistakes. NB: All assignments must be written in your own words. Attempts at plagiarism (ie. taking something directly from any source without a direct reference) in any assignment will be an automatic fail.

Assessment: Assessment is carried out on a continuous basis and covers the candidates' professional awareness, assessment of teaching practice and the written assignments. We look for consistent progress throughout. There will be two formal tutorials during the course, although you will be made aware of your progress continuously in feedback. An independent assessor representing UCLES will visit during the course. The assessor will sit in on lessons and input, and will look at your portfolios. The role of the assessor is to assess the centre and to ensure standardisation.

At the end of the course UCLES will issue a certificate to successful candidates.
