Description:
The TESOL certificate is specifically targeted at those who are interested in teaching English as a second or foreign language. Preferably, students should have a college degree or equivalent. However, students with at least college and Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification will also be considered. The most important consideration is that students must be fluent in both oral and written English. You will be assigned a personal tutor as soon as you enroll, who will give you help and guidance through the course as well as mark your assignments and give you personal feedback. Course Outline Unit 1: Teachers and Learners (roles, levels and ages, motivation, error correction, STT/TTT, eliciting and instructions, managing a classroom native and non-native teachers, learner needs and analysis) Unit 2 English Skills (grammar, vocabulary, phonology and connected speech, reading, writing, listening, speaking, language functions, Project 1) Unit 3: The Lesson (presentation techniques, warmers, grouping students, lesson planning and integrated lessons, resources and adaptation, testing, video and computer aids, methodologies, ESP, Project 2) Unit 4: Practicum Objectives: Unit 1 Teachers and Learners Students will be able to: - demonstrate awareness the various roles a teacher can take in the classroom and why, as well as techniques to manage problems - understand the differences between different ages and levels, what motivates students, as well as how to do a learner needs analysis - understand the importance and practice various forms of error correction, STT/TTT, elicitation and the giving of instructions - explain the difference between native and non-native speakers, gaining confidence in themselves as well as explicitly acknowledging challenges and how to overcome them Unit 2 English Skills Students will be able to: - understand the metalanguage for discussing the English language and its components - describe and plan activities which practice the four main skills along with their sub-skills - understand and practice giving communicative lessons for the four main skills as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation - recognize features of connected speech, stress and intonation - recognize and be able to teach language for common language functions - complete Project 1: Based on a given text, design a lesson to focus on 2 Unit 3 The Lesson Students will be able to: - appreciate the importance of warmers and design appropriate lead in activities for various topic-based and skill lessons - organize a classroom appropriately according to activity - design a lesson plan with clearly defined aims and procedure steps - integrate skills in a lesson and connect a lesson into a coherent syllabus - outline coursebook features and how to adapt coursebooks and additional resources to suit learner needs - locate a variety of resources on their own which are authentic - use realia appropriately - recognize the importance of the different forms of assessment, including diagnostic/achievement tests and the important distinction between being objective and subjective - demonstrate knowledge of a variety of contemporary language teaching methodologies and approaches - recognize learner needs and resources for ESP - complete Project 2: research two methodologies further and design a 60 minute lesson, with materials, for each one

Qualifications:
All candidates for the course must: -be at least 18 years of age with a bachelors degree in any discipline -hold a Bachelors Degree in any discipline -demonstrate a level of English competence equal to IELTS band score of 6.0 -show an earnest desire to work in groups -Diploma candidates must have at least 3 years experience teaching English and demonstrate a concerted effort to continue in education in the future To be admitted, candidates must provide documentation of accredited university degree as well as IELTS or TOEFL scores of 6.0 or 550, respectively. In cases where the candidate has not taken these tests, a test will be given them by Cambridge Taipei which assesses competence in the skills of speaking, writing, listening and reading in English. Their marks must be equal to or above the scores mentioned above. A face-to-face or phone interview will also be carried out with a qualified trainer from Cambridge Taipei to assess overall English ability as well as level of commitment to undertake the challenging TESOL course.
